WALKING L.A. – (Sur)facing the city
An artist-talk with Sara Wookey
Los Angeles, CA
In this artist talk, Sara will discuss the history leading up to her current project, Walking L.A., which emerges from her two and a half years of research on walking in Los Angeles. This project has developed into various forms, such as live performance, installation, and urban intervention performances as it considers the intersection of the self/subject and the built urban landscape. The live performance work will premiere in Los Angeles in February 2008 under the artistic advice of Yvonne Rainer (choreographer and filmmaker) and Edward Soja (urban planning).
This forty-five minute talk is followed by a discussion with the audience and is open to students and professionals from the fields of dance, performance, visual art, new media, architecture, geography and urban planning.
About her...
Sara Wookey is a choreographer and multi-disciplinary artist working between the mediums of dance, performance, photography, and video who recently relocated back to the United States from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where she was based for ten years. Her work has been presented in the Canada, Czech Republic, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Spain and, most recently, at the Hammer Museum, REDCAT and 24th Street Theater in Los Angeles. She has been a guest artist at, among others, The Amsterdam School for the Arts, Chisenhale Dance Space in London, The Duncan Centre Konzervator in Prague, The Ohio State University and the Wexner Center for the Arts.

7 Songs by Rodrigo Sobarzo
Friday the 15 - Jeroen Fabius will be coordinating the Friday Lunch Lecture this Friday
1:30 pm
Jeroen Fabius and SNDO 2
Presentation by students of the course Anthropology and
Choreography lead by Jeroen Fabius. We have observed the
documentary Shoah by Claude Lanzmann from 1984, in which
Lanzmann collects eye witness accounts about the Holocaust.
In the documentary we see only these talks and sites where
the terrible events took place, in long takes, that show empty spaces,
' guilty space' that account for the eradication of millions of individuals.
Students of the second year will react to the documentary, and
choose different modes in doing that.

And next Friday the 18...
1:30
Melvin Fraenk (SNDO3) would like to do a open rehearsal of a work he is doing at the JMD (Jazz and Musical Department) where he regularly teach dance and make choreographic work.
He would like to share with us his experience as well to bring his work in the street dance field together with his choreographic work at the SNDO.
2:15
Rhada (SNDO4) will give a lecture over her final thesis from ethnology and cultural anthropology studies. She finished her thesis in 2005, but now she prepared a translation that soon will be available in the AHK library. She shortly would like to present the observed principles in connection to the used theory of habitus made by P. Bourdieu, which she had applied in her work. She tried to extract principles of learning, performing and teaching improvisation in order to see them within everyday praxes. At the same time she was observing where and how improvisational principles already take part in our daily praxes and we can later apply them to our professional praxes.
Don't miss it.. and please invite everybody you want..it is an open event and at the same time a meeting point for we all!
Greetings,
SF
